Blumat Digital for controlled moisture measurement directly in the root zone
Blumat Digital is a digital precision instrument for monitoring soil moisture. Rather than judging moisture at the surface alone, it measures suction tension within the root zone and displays the result in millibars. This gives you a practical way to understand how readily water is available to the roots and to adjust watering times to the requirements of your plants and growing medium.
Suction tension reflects water availability around the roots
A porous ceramic tip remains in contact with the surrounding growing medium. As the soil dries, water is drawn out of the filled plastic tube and negative pressure develops inside it. The measuring head detects this pressure. A higher reading indicates drier conditions and means the roots need to exert more force to take up water. After watering, the negative pressure falls again.
Use measured values to guide watering
The measuring range is 0–750 mbar with a stated accuracy of ±1%. As a general guide, Blumat describes values below 50 mbar as wet and values above 200 mbar as dry. Suitable target ranges still depend on the plant and growing medium. Pressing the button displays the reading for ten seconds. After installing or moving the sensor, allow 2–3 hours before assessing the measurement.
Suitable for pots and a wide range of growing situations
According to Blumat, the sensor can be used in all soils and clay granulates, both indoors and outdoors. Applications include plant containers, shrubs, bushes and fruit or vegetable cultivation. Blumat Digital measures moisture conditions but does not water plants automatically. It can therefore be used to check and refine either manual or automatic watering. Prepare the sensor before taking measurements
Before first use, unscrew the measuring head and place the plastic tube with its ceramic tip in water for at least five minutes. Fill the tube with clean tap water before refitting the measuring head. Insert the sensor into the outer part of the root zone. For more comparable readings over time, Blumat recommends leaving it in the same position.
