Saffron is a feminized photoperiod variety developed entirely by Purple City Genetics (PCG), one of the most recognized banks on the Californian elite genetics scene. The result of an in-house cross between two top-tier lines, this indica-dominant hybrid stands out for its high resin production, complex aromatic profile, and balanced effect that make it a demanding and distinctive option for experienced growers.

Genetics: heritage of champions

Saffron is born from the cross between Moroccan Peaches and Street Guru, two in-house lines from the bank. Moroccan Peaches—a cross of Spanish Barbara x Lemon Tree Skorange—took first place in the rosin category at the Emerald Cup 2023, one of the most demanding competitions in the field of extractions. Street Guru, for its part, is the combination of Gush Mints x Oreoz, an elite base present in multiple crosses from the PCG catalogue. From this union comes Saffron, a genetic that has also demonstrated its value as a maternal parent in the Shiso variety from the bank’s Akira Collection, reflecting the stability and solidity of its genetic expression.

Cultivation: stability, resin and good management

Saffron is a variety of medium difficulty, suitable for growers with some experience looking to make the most of its resinous potential. Indoors, it prefers warm and stable conditions, and responds particularly well to strategic pruning that favors canopy aeration and the formation of dense colas. Its productivity is in a medium-high range. Outdoors, available data points to maturation in October in the northern hemisphere, a cycle consistent with indica-dominant genetics grown under direct sunlight.

Aromas, flavors and effects

Saffron’s sensory profile is one of its most outstanding assets. The aroma combines sweet peach with notes of gas, herbal nuances and a spicy touch that add complexity to the whole. On the palate, sweet fruit takes center stage from the first moment to evolve towards a background of caramel, gas and spices, with a slightly peppery aftertaste on the exhale. Its terpene profile—with notable presence of myrcene, caryophyllene, nerolidol and pinene—is unusual within the PCG catalogue: nerolidol, rarely found in its varieties, clearly distinguishes it from other gas lines from the bank.

Saffron’s effect is hybrid and progressive. It starts with a euphoric and introspective cerebral phase that invites quiet reflection, to gradually drift towards a calming physical relaxation without falling into the couch-lock characteristic of the heaviest indicas. With a THC level catalogued as high-very high—consistent with the potency of its parents—conscious consumption is recommended, especially indicated for late afternoon-evening, in moments of disconnection or leisurely enjoyment.
